Cigarette Distributor Concerned About Illegal Cigarettes On The Local MarketCigarette distributor, Carreras is expressing concern about the increasing quantity of illegal cigarettes on the local market.

Managing Director of Carreras, Marcus Steele, says although he commends the Counter Terrorism and Organized Crime Branch, CTOC, on their find yesterday, this latest find, is the largest yet.

Yesterday, CTOC confiscated 890 boxes of counterfeit cigarettes, estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

One man was arrested in relation to the find.

Mr. Steele notes that this type of illegal activity is harmful to consumers’ health and is costing the government up to $190 million in revenue.

He explains that there is a link between high taxation, and the illicit trade.

Mr. Steele is urging the government, to look at its ports, to ensure that the illegal product does not make its way into the market.
