Remember His Name Samuel SharpeOn this date May 23rd in the year 1831 Samuel Sharpe led a peaceful protest that turned into Jamaica’s largest slave rebellion,killing hundreds including 14 whites.

It took two weeks for the military to combat the rebellion and all the ringleaders of the revolt including Sharpe were hung.

just before his death he said (I would rather die in yonder gallows,than to live one more day as a slave) the rebellion caused two detailed parlamentary inquiries which contributed to the 1833 abolition of slavery across the British Empire.
